The aggressive policing of boundaries between "trans", "trap", "drag queen", "crossdresser", "feminine male", etc is more of an anglosphere thing is it not? Not saying it's all the same but what's the status of the term "trans" in Japan, do they have all these subcategories or is it like how metal heads think there can be single-song subgenres of metal and that it's a useful concept even if it was just made up for that song?

in japanese culture outside of anime trans women are everywhere. typically put in the role of hyperfem entertainers/tarento. in literature too, ("Kitchen" by Banana Yoshimoto has multiple unambiguous trans women) typically about gritty environments. you also see a trans woman in Tokyo Godfathers and it's about three homeless people. there's a pretty clear pattern here. japan thinks of capital t Transgender people as something that only happens if you're poor or unstable enough. there's no throughline between childhood/adolescent gender nonconformity and Trans People as a phenomenon. they're two completely separate things in the cultural consciousness.
