This has been the case for many European countries. Russia was actually more tolerant of gays before the Communists took over, after which they passed strict anti-LGBT laws. Firstly, only 49% of the continent is Christian so I don't know what's the point here to tie homosexuality being illegal with Christianity. Homosexuality is illegal even in pretty much all African countries who aren't Christian majority countries.

Secondly, Africa isn't a monolith. In some countries, homosexuality has always been forbidden, even prior the European colonisation. I'm from Senegal. Homosexuality has always been forbidden. This even prior the arrival of Islam. The Fat Rog (Seereer religion) is the oldest and most documented religion of Senegambia. Homosexuality was never allowed. Adultery was already described as a crime. And so on. Seereer people like Wolof people believed in a unique divinity/god with lots of rules similar to Islam. It's why Islam took so easily and this without any Arab or North African invasion as seen with the non-Arabisation of the region. The French colonisation only made homosexuality illegal with a legal context. Prior that, you really don't want to know what happened if you were caught being homosexual.

Finally, "the white person thing" with homosexuality mostly comes from the belief most Africans have that the West is pushing a pro-LGBT narrative over them. Are they wrong? Not always. Does it excuse them to be homophobic? Not at all. The reality is that African countries on their own must address this point of the homosexuality. And yes, it will take a lot of time in most countries of the continent but it's the only way because the more you will try to force something over people, the more they oppose it. To decriminalise homosexuality is a debate each society in Africa must have on its own.

It doesn't. However there are other international organizations with international funding (including from Europe) that advocate for LGBT in Africa, so that's probably where that perception comes from.
