Odd how there have been gender non-conforming groups of people in countless cultures (two-spirit, fa'afafine, katoeys...), but nowhere before the 20th and 21st century US were they insisting that they need to be acknowledged as the opposite gender and given hormones or they will kill themselves, they just lived their lives perfectly happy and didn't conform to their birth gender.
