Because cutters are talentless NPCs incapable of original thought. They do this shit for attention and to feel a sense of community with other cutters. If they actually had to put any thought or effort into it they would realize how retarded they are for doing this in the first place.
if i cut fancy symbols that’s a massive commitment to me liking that symbol for a long time and that’s assuming it heals in an aesthetically pleasing way. lines are far better since they’re neutral, plus if someone sees them they won’t think i was doing it for attention or to be cool like might be the case with a more complex symbol

I knew a ftm (who by todays standards would be called a theyfab) who cut the word “KILL” on his right thigh. It was a significant scar. No half ass shit. He said he did it to piss off his mom and sent the picture of it to her after doing it.

carved "fuck you" once when i was younger
i've carved "ugly", "fake", "gross", and :3. they usually dont say visible for long because i use cat scratches for them- really hard to cut a design while also cutting deep

i actually barely did any aftercare for this. i tried to put some bandaids on but they overflowed very quickly so i just sat in my room until it dried enough for it to not start bleeding every time i stood up
i dont cut my wrists i dont want to cut any tendons plus its just not my thing
