She can have negative sexual intentions even though you’re an adult. I’d point out that there’s a difference between a friend, who’s usually your age or a mentor who’s older. A mentor is more like teacher while that person is friend who’s 20 years older than you. I don’t want to offend you, but people like you tend to be softer and easily played with.

It wasn't the most common usage, but it also wasn't something that would get you any funny looks. Just a mildly atypical usage.
Then the stigma happened and this usage completely disappeared for online types, except among people who wanted to make a political point in their word choice. You're not old enough to have lived through these changes in how words are used, so for you, this is just how it is, but it wasn't always like this.
