Whatever the consensus is on this board, the common understanding is still that gender is the changeable thing, sex isn't. For all intents and purposes gender is what is really perceived by others on the day to day basis and should probably be what everything but relevant medical records identifies someone as. And of course medical records should include then whether or not the individual is on HRT (this+weight more important than birth sex assignment for most common medical purposes ex medication dosing).
And yes I am 100% saying that societal perception is the most important thing. Other things have value but they still don't matter near as much. "Skirt go spinny" and insanely AGP public behavior or identities centered around the treatment of women as sex objects that you want to become do a lot to disqualify you as a woman. On the other hand, "legal sex" is weaponized against TERFs. If the government legally recognizes someone's sex, then by extension it needs to then go-to-bat for that person. Otherwise the government's authority over such matters starts to be questioned. So if the government says this person is a women, then you are in legal shit for refusing her.
So we end up with this tug-of-war over the levers of power. Both sides want to control the institutions around sex and use it to destroy the other.
And all this is happening over what? The government wanting to produce some charts of "number of males and number of females in each age cohort"?
